Today, purchasing a diamond ring or earrings is not a very simple matter. In order not to be mistaken, you need to at least know the price per carat of the diamond itself, but if a diamond is bought a second time, then even the most modern calculator will not be able to give accurate data on its price. In this case, the Rappoport scale comes to the rescue.

What is the Rapport scale

The Rapoport price list, as it is also called, the Rappoport scale, is the oldest and most popular edition that presents an indicator of prices for such a beautiful and noble stone as a diamond.

The very first issue of this scale was presented back in 1978. It is named after its developer Martin Rapaport. Yes, of course, this price list has certain drawbacks, but nevertheless, it is used by most diamond sellers around the world.

The scale itself is presented in the form of two sheets with prices. The first sheet contains the cost for round stones, and on the second - accordingly, for the "Pear" cut, as well as for other types of fancy material processing.

How to use the Rapoport scale correctly

For calculating the value of diamonds, the basis is taken as the highest value of a similar stone, which sellers or dealers are ready to offer to their buyers. This means that each time the value of a diamond is subjectively revised. The presented value for stones, according to the scale, varies from 0.01 carats to 10.99 carats, if the quality of the cut of the stone meets the condition "very good".

Stones with excellent cut (Excellent) will cost 10 or 20% more.

The cost of a stone is determined by its carat value (according to the expert's opinion), multiplied by the price of one carat for a stone of this class. So, for 1 carat you can get up to hundreds of US dollars.

The price list for the Rappoprt scale consists of 18 tables, in which all values are set by weight. Moving between these values, one can observe an increase in the value of diamonds, starting from 20% and ending with 40%. For example, if you take a diamond stone weighing a carat of the G / VS1 class, which costs about 8 thousand dollars, then a stone with a weight of 1.5 carats will cost 11 thousand dollars. In this case, the so-called premium is added to the income, when there is a transition from one weight position to another, the premium is 35%.

If you need to calculate the "net" value of a diamond, you need to rely on tables from the Rapoport reference book, where the calculation is carried out in US dollars per point. Meanwhile, in order to find out how much a diamond is worth, it is necessary to multiply the numbers from the corresponding row of the classifier by 100 points, since one carat is equal to 100 points.

As you can see, the Rapoport scale itself is a kind of reference for dealers. However, it is not always possible to sell profitably rough diamonds according to this scale.
