Polishing is the final process in stone processing, as a result of which its surface acquires a mirror-like shine, the pattern, color and structure of the rock are revealed. As a rule, the stone is polished with special devices and in several stages.
Instructions
Step 1
Before polishing the stone, you need to grind it to remove all traces after cutting the stone. Grinding can be divided into three operations: roughing (rough grinding), grinding and lapping - polishing. If you don't have a stone machine, sand the glass.
Step 2
To do this, take glass (6-10 mm thick), pour abrasive powder on it, moisten it with water and sand in a circular motion. You can also use fine sandpaper for sanding. If you will be grinding stone on a machine, then use a wheel made of cast iron, lead or copper. Make sure that the surface of these circles is flat and smooth.
Step 3
To polish on the machine, remove the faceplate, then the protective (plastic) case and wash them thoroughly with soap and a brush. Put the cleaned parts back in place, fasten the polishing wheel, put a pinch of powder on the wheel, moisten the powder with water and rub it in a circle. You can use aluminum, zinc, chromium oxide, diamond dust as polishing powders. Start the motor and polish the stone. But to polish the stone on the machine, you can use felt, felt or cloth. Make circles with a thickness of 10-20 mm from these materials and glue them on a cast-iron faceplate with shellac, sealing wax, a mixture of sealing wax with rosin or tar, but place a sheet of rubber between the metal and the polished material. Lightly moisten felt, felt, cloth circles before polishing. While grinding or polishing, bring and press the stone carefully, the movement of the hand should be directed against the rotation of the circle.
Step 4
If you need to polish hard stones such as granite, jasper, use wheels made from alder, aspen, poplar, or beech. But make sure that they rotate at 200 rpm, as the polishing is better at lower speeds. Stones of the same type have different polishing properties. For each stone, it is necessary to select an individual amount and combination of powders, the speed of rotation of the disk, and the force of pressure.
Step 5
To check the quality of the stone polishing, wipe the polished surface with a clean cloth, stand near the switched on electric lamp and try to find the reflection of the hair of the burning lamp on the surface of the stone. If the reflection is visible, then the polishing was successful. If you do not have polishing tools, then replace the polishing of the stone with varnish using a colorless varnish.
