A standard is a regulatory document that defines the general technical and other parameters of an object, which is developed on the basis of agreement on significant issues by the interested parties. In simple terms, the standard sets out the rules, norms and characteristics for products of one type.
The standard should set out not only the requirements for the parameters and characteristics, quality and constituent elements of the product. It specifies the safety conditions for this product, work and services for the life and health of the consumer, its environmental safety and requirements that ensure safe operation. The standard regulates the quality of products in accordance with technical, sanitary, ergonomic and other standards.
The standards provide for the compatibility and interchangeability of products, both technical and informational. This allows the use of products of different names, which, in terms of their technical and physical characteristics, if they comply with the standard, can be guaranteed to be combined. The simplest example is the voltage in household electrical outlets, which according to the standard is 220 W (with established tolerances). This allows you to buy and use household electrical appliances without fear that they may burn out or they will not have enough mains voltage to work.
Standardization affects all areas of human life and makes it much easier. Furniture manufactured to national standards will have a standard height and width. In a house built according to a standard design, the parameters of window and door openings will be the same. Even food products made according to the established recipe in compliance with the standard will have the same quality and taste.
Standards are both national and developed for one specific enterprise or industry. The standardization of production greatly simplifies the life of both manufacturers and consumers of products. Their use guarantees high quality products, increases the level of unification and interchangeability, allows you to automate production and improve the maintainability of products.
Currently, not only state, but also international standards are being developed. In connection with the objective processes of globalization, this has become an urgent need.
